I have been waiting quite some time for new music from the Aussie hardcore outfit Cursed Earth. About a year ago, I stumbled upon their release entitled "Enslaved by the Insignificant" and was instantly hooked. Seriously, before you continue on, go check out that release. The buzzsaw guitar tone, breakneck pace, and crushing riffage really made Enslaved by the Insignificant stand out to me. I absolutely TORTURED my friends with their music for a solid 4 months.
Leading up to Cycles of Grief, I just wanted one thing: for Cursed Earth to keep the unique sound they created and not stray too far from their previous release. Not only did they do just that, they released something better. They took the foundation they laid from previous works and built something incredible on it.
Cycles of Grief wastes no time. The haunting opening chords of War March turn into a vicious, groovy hi-hat riff that sets the tone nicely for the sonic assault that follows. Just like Enslaved, the tracks on Cycles of Grief lead into one another seamlessly. Once War March (basically their slowest song on the release), the listener is met with a wall of sound that could physically knock you on your ass. Broken is a very quick song that fills it short stint with pure aggression. The next track, Discarded, sounds more like the cursed earth I am familiar with: throats ripping vocals and absolute mayhem broken apart by some unexpected jarring breakdowns. The last two tracks refuse to let their grip loosen on the listener with more heaping doses of aggression and groovy as fuck riffs paired with some awesome vocal patterns.
Cycles of Grief goes by very fast. The record is over before you can process what you just listened to, encourage multiple playthroughs per sitting. There was a few times while writing this that I didn't even realize the EP restarted because it is all blended so well. My favorite aspect of this band has always been the vocalist. Jazmine smashes any preconceived notions you'd have about a female vocalist. There are very few vocalists I can think of in the scene today that can portray anger and aggression so fucking well.
Cursed Earth is what I consider a band that has perfected their sound. They are fast, grindy, heavy, and just batshit crazy. I cant think of a single bad thing I could say about them. I only have one request: DO AN AMERICA TOUR.
Bottom Line: if you like your hardcore fast and grindy, this will be your new favorite band. Cursed Earth blurs the line between breakdowns and riffs and have developed a sound of their own that makes them impossible to ignore.
